what did nobles do to pass time?
Women relaxing on a veranda playing instruments
Nobles in ancient China had a lot of spare time, especially if you were a female, or a child. Noble men spent their time, working (bossing slaves about), while noble women spent their time looking after the kids or doing chores.
Noble women
Noble women had considerably more free time than the men, but that was because women weren't allowed to be in the army or work, except 'simple’ things such as embroidery, or sewing. When they were not doing that women played with their kids, did the gardening, did chores, or talked to their noble friends.
Noble children
Noble children had a life of luxury, although girls were not allowed to attend school and classes, they were taught how to read by their mothers/brothers. Boys spent a lot of their time at school, studying to become advisors, military commanders or philosophers. Some young boys enjoyed high-flying and all children enjoyed playing sports, but it all depended on the family and how high they were in the noble hierarchy.
Noble Adults
A noble adult’s recreational activities usually depended on the household. Some families were quiet and calm and there activities consisted of reading, listening or sometimes writing philosophies, watching horse races, watching opera, plays and playing Chinese chess. Other families enjoyed hunting, watching or being a part of martial art combat, watching and betting on horse races.
